Cath Lab
The following are pictures of supplies used during a routine diagnostic cath. They are provided to help study participants identify supplies.

Pre Procedure/Prep Activites

The following supplies are used to prepare the patient's room or provided to the patient:

  • Fitted sheet
  • Pillowcase
  • Top sheet
  • Reusable underpad
  • Patient valuables bag
  • Patient gown
  • Terry cloth slippers with skid-resistant soles, XL
  • Blanket, if requested by patient (not shown)

    The following lab tests are run:
  • PT/PTT
  • Chem 7
  • Type & screen
  • CBC

    The following supplies are used to draw the patient's labs:
  • Exam gloves (not shown)
  • Tourniquet
  • Alcohol prep
  • Needle 22ga x 1"
  • Vacutainer holder
  • Blood collection tubes
       - Blue top (Buffered CIT Na)
       - Gold top (SST gel & clot activator)
       - Red top (No additive)
       - Purple top (K3 EDTA)
  • 2 x 2 Gauze (3)
  • Tape

    The patient has a 12-lead ECG and the only additional supplies used are the 10 ECG electrodes.

    A temperature probe cover (not shown) is also used.

    A blood pressure cuff (not shown) is used.

    The nurse starts the patient's IV and hangs fluid, using the following items:
  • Exam gloves
  • Tourniquet
  • Alcohol prep
  • Catheter 20 or 22ga x 1" with wings
  • Extension set Y 7.5" (hep lock)
  • Extension set/tubing with 2 valves, 35"
  • IV administration set/tubing, 105"
  • Tape
  • IV fluids, one of the following:
       - D 5 1/2 NS
       - 1/2 NS
       - D 5 W
  • Transparent dressing (See picture below)
    Patients with drips, require IMED tubing and pumps (not shown).

    The patient is shaved and prepared for the cath.
    The following supplies are used:
  • Exam gloves
  • Corn starch powder
  • Razor (disposable)
  • ECG leads, radio-translucent (5)
  • Pulse Oxy sensor
  • Denture cup, if needed

    Oxygen is sometimes needed and a nasal cannula is used.

    This is backtable prepared for use in the cath lab. In the future, we will list the supplies used during the procedure.

    Post Procedure/Recovery Activites

    When the patient returns from his or her cath, the technician or nurse prepare to remove the sheath. The following items are used to provide protection:
  • Exam gloves (May use sterile gloves if manual compression is required)
  • Face shield (disposable, but reusable unless soiled)
  • Gown

    The following items are used following the cath:
  • Betadine swabsticks - to prep the area prior to sheath removal (1 package contains 3)
  • 4x4 Gauze sponges, 12 ply - to wipe off excess betadine and for spills (1 package)
  • Compression disc - see sizes/types below

    After blood flow has stopped, the following items are used:
  • Tincture of Benzoin - sprayed on skin around site skin protection and better adhesive bandage holding.
  • 4x4 Gauze sponges, 4 ply - rolled/folded to cover wound (3 packages)
  • Elastic bandage - to hold the sponges in place to form a pressure dressing.

    This is the mechanical pressure holding device.

    These are the three types of compression discs used.

    When the patient is ready to be released, the IV access is removed and the following items are used (items not shown):
  • Exam gloves
  • 2x2 gauze sponges (3)
  • Tape
